A year ago, the forecast issue of Glass Digest, along with every other forecast, was predicting continued growth, but not at the same level as the previous year. If we were to change the dates, it seems the same predictions could be repeated for 2000. The US economy appears to be the strongest, most vigorous economy in the world. However, the picture is not perfect. The overall health of the economy is distorted by some very successful business and the riches are by no means evenly distributed. The manufacturing sector has felt the pinch from declining export markets and from competition from foreign suppliers. Employers are also facing rising employment costs as a result of the low unemployment level.
