There is an urgent need to double the amount of glass recycled in the UK and to divert the glass still going to landfill. Figures from Glasspac indicate that recycled tonnage rose by 2.5% to 587,000/tonnes in 2001, with 35% of glass recycled for packaging. Expansion of collection methods and infrastructure is important, together with the growing market in recycled glass which needs to be emphasised, to local authorities and the public. In order to meet the 2008 targets set by the EU's Packaging Directive, Glasspac believe that improvements are needed in kerbside collection in particular and in bottle banks, collections from pubs and clubs and in heightened public awareness.
