The high purity required of the alkali borosilicate glasses employed for double crucible drawing of optical wave guide fibres necessitated development of reliable highly sensitive ultratrace analysis procedures to identify and control contamination levels of the deleterious transition metals, notably, iron, copper nickel and chromium. The methodology, based on preconcentration and electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry, developed to acheive this high performance analytical capability is described.
