Recycling at home is experiencing a major growth spurt. New figures for household waste disposal in England show the amount recycled has doubled over the last four years. English households recycled around 23% of their waste in the year to March/05, according to DEFRA. The figure for the previous year was just under 18%. People in the east of England recycle the most, at 29%. The greatest improvement came in the East Midlands, which increased its recycling performance by 7% to 27%. But there is plenty of room for improvement, with some EU neighbours managing household recycling rates of 60%. Environment Minister Ben Bradshaw said: "There's no doubt we can be proud of our progress to date, but now its time to build on that and start catching up with some of Europe's top recyclers."
