The UK Highways Agency has approved the use of Glasphalt as a resurfacing material. Glasphalt was developed by RMC Aggregates and contains 30% crushed glass cullet as an alternative to traditional aggregates. A mixture of crushed cullet from recycling schemes, limestone and bitumen, Glasphalt is made in RMC's quarry in Derbyshire where the glass is first crushed, impurities removed and mixed with the other components. The material is being used to resurface a stretch of the M50 and M6 motorways. Glasphalt is intended to utilise collected glass waste that has very few end markets and not as an alternative to remelting in the glass industry. In the UK, there is a large excess of collected green glass cullet as the amount of this coloured glass introduced with imports such as wine and beer, far outweighs the quantity of green glass produced by the industry.
