According to the report, in 2002 the apparent UK market for glass packaging represented around 7% of the total sales of the UK packaging industry, (1% rise between 2001-02). The most important end-user of glass packaging by some distance is the food industry with 40% of the value of the market in 2002. Around 66% of the drinks glass market is destined for alcoholic drinks, particularly beers, cider & spirits, with the remainder soft drinks. In the food sector, only 6% of food is packaged in glass, although food is worth 40% of the glass packaging market. Here the market has faced increasing pressure from plastic & alternatives, although glass is still specified by a number of premium brands due to the perceived associations of quality among consumers.
