The UK's food processors will come under greater pressure to ship their products in environmentally-friendly materials after government announced a plan to increase minimum recycling targets for glass & plastics packaging. However those putting their products in metal & paper packaging will get some relief as Defra proposes to lower targets for those kinds of materials. The agency yesterday launched a second consultation on the proposed measures, driven by the need to ensure the UK meets packaging recovery targets set by the EU's tough new packaging directive. New requirements set by the EC last year roughly double packaging recycling targets for the bloc's 25 members. They will put extra cost pressures on the food industry, which is a major producer of packaging waste. For more information see: www.foodproductiondaily.com/news/ng.asp?id=62046
