Major power using industries including glassmaking are trying to win changes to the EU's proposed emissions trading scheme to limit its impact on electricity prices. The lobby includes CPIV, the standing committee of the EU glass industries, plus lobbying groups from the metals, lime, cement, ceramics, paper and steel sectors. They claim the combination of the existing electricity pricing scheme plus emissions trading would hit competitiveness because of higher electricity prices with windfall profits for electricity producers. Instead they propose to separate the carbon dioxide emissions market from the power market with a new invoicing system for any additional allowances for emissions that power producers might need.
