For more than a century, glass has been used in biological and medical applications. Properties of transparency, relative chemical inertness, and the ability to be sterilized led to use as drung containers, thermometers, microscope slides for analysis, and culture growth. These applications continue to grow, as does an ever-increasing list of actual, or proposed, applications that involve glass as an active part of the healing process rather than just a sensor or analysis tool.
