A formal review of health and safety training requirements for the Float Technology Group within Pilkington Technology Centre was carried out. The findings of the review highlighted a number of deficiencies: The group had a system in place which captured the competency gained from external training courses. However, there was no system in place to identify and record competency with regard to the in-house training of people to operate and use equipment safely; also, there was no system to identify persons competent to train others. A team was set up and a 5-step improvement plant devised to develop a system which captures the level of competency of all group personnel for all in-house training. This is highlighted in this article, using one specific process, a Hydrofluoric (HF) acid cleaning facility.
