Tougher Pint Glass Limits Casualties

Demaglass is to produce tougher beer glasses as the government attempts to reduce the number of injuries caused by smashed glasses in pubs. The toughened glasses are estimated to cost around 10% to 15% more to produce. Standard pint glasses have a tendency to break at the rim, leaving a jagged edge and a firm base. However, tests carried out on the toughened glasses have revelaed that they are around six times more difficult to break. The move to introduce the glasses is part of 10 years of campaigns by Professor Jonathon Shepherd of Cardiff Royal Infirmary. He has conducted research and has found that around 75% of attacks in pubs were carried out with straight sided pint glasses. The Association of Chief Police Officers has called for the compulsory introduction of the glasses in UK pubs and nightclubs. (whole item)
