Tougher Packaging Targets For Uk

Tougher packaging recovery & recycling targets for the next 2 years have been announced by UK environment minister. The planned changes include increases in the recycling & recovery targets, increasing turnover threshold to £2m in 2000, & removal of the "wholesaler" obligation. The main changes are: Targets have been increased to 43% recovery and 10% recycling for 1999, rising to 45% recovery and 13% recycling in 2000 (2001 targets same); the % obligation splits remain unchanged for the 4 sectors, raw material 6%, converter 11%, packer/filler 36% & seller 47%; turnover threshold will be £2m; no household waste obligation; sellers & compliance schemes have responsibility of informing consumers about the role they can play; a new form is provided for the Env Agency registration deadline 7/April 99; half-year results reported; wholesaler obligation removed.
