Pilkington has become the first British company to install a new generation DL38 Karl Fischer titrator from Mettler-Toledo. It will be used in the development of new fire retardant glazing products. Valued at £7000, the system includes a Mettler-Toledo DO305 heat treatment unit for moisture analysis studies now being conducted by scientists at the company's European technology centre in Lathom. Pilkington is committed to the development of state-of-the-art fire resistant technology for architectural applications which provide high performance fire resistant glazings. The product's ability to delay the spread of fire is due to a fire retardant membrane, or interlayer, sandwiched inside the glass. It effectively prevents the passage of heat for between 30-120 minutes, depending on the sheet's thickness and the fire's temperature.
