Thermal shock resistance tests were carried out on returnable cylindrical glass containers with a wall thickness of about 4mm which had been used for 7-10 years. None of test bottles broke under a thermal differential of up to 95 deg C. However, certain factors must be taken into consideration during sudden cooling: the maximum temperature difference allowable for sudden cooling is about 40 deg C at a pressure of one atmosphere and about 35 deg C at an internal pressure of 6.0 kg cm-2. From these experiments, it is also suggested that the allowable limit of residual strain should be about 60nm optical retardation.
