Different methods for the characterization of the redox state of batches containing recycled cullet with organic materials are reviewed. The usefulness of oxygen activity measurements in glass melts for characterization of the redox state is shown in more detail, by presenting some typical results of both laboratory and industrial in-situ experiments. For the industrial measurements, disposable solid state oxygen reference electrodes have been used. It is concluded that oxygen activity measurements in glass melts can provide a link to correlate batch redox to glass product properties.
