Glass production is a high temperature, high energy input process resulting in the emission of products of combustion and the high temperature oxidation of atmospheric nitrogen. Chief among the pollutants in glass furnace off-gas are particulate matter, SOx and NOx. A number of techniques exist to reduce or treat glass furnace emissions. In broad terms, measures which reduce emissions at source are defined as primary techniques while techniques which treat emissions are defined as secondary. In this article the author outlines some techniques and solutions for meeting emission reduction targets.
