Sustainability Project Reports Findings

A report examining ways in which industry & government can work together to improve the efficiency & environmental impact of the glass industry has been published. The "Changing Patterns Project", undertaken by DEFRA, the DTI & British Glass, examines ways to implement the principles of sustainable consumption & production. The report focuses on container manufacture, consumption & recycling & the thermal glazing supply chain. It identifies conflicts between existing environmental legislation, eg between the CCL & the manufacture of energy saving glass products, & legislation which removes recycled glass from the remanufacturing stream, reducing potential carbon savings. The report recommends accruing carbon credits by manufacturing energy saving glass products, reducing carbon emissions. It also recommends ways in which to increase container glass recycling.
