Surface Analysis Of Internally Treated Dealkalized Containers

As received type II soda lime glass containers were investigated with SIMS, XPS, EMPA and IRRS to assess the chemical composition of the inner surface and the type and depth of the dealkalization profiles produced by surface treatment. The analysis of a range of samples produced with various processes showed that the composition of the outer 5nm is similar, while the dealkalization level and the profile depth vary from sample to sample and within a given container, as a result of the process conditions. The bloom consists essentially of crystalline sodium sulfate, occasionally associated with some bisulfate.
