The results of a study of the surface of A and E glass fibres and the adsorbed water are given. A very sensitive method is required to detect the presence of two types of micropore on the fibre surface. The presence of weakly and strongly bound water layers could be shown. The change of the surface texture of the fibres when attacked by various reagents, such as H2O, HCl, and HF, has been examined. A different structure for each fibre has been proposed from experimental results.
