Strength, Nonlinear Stress-Strain Behaviour, And Structural Flaws In Glass

Recently reported very high failure strains for fused silica and borosilicate fibres have been recalculated to take account of nonlinear stress-strain behaviour. The Griffith energy balance criterion was also modified and the dimensions of fundamental structural flaws estimated as about 4nm for fused silica and about 7nm for the borosilicate glass.
