Strength Degradation Of Automotive Windshield From Manufacturing To On-Road Service

The biaxial strength data for individual glass plies, new and used windshields, and high speed stone-impacted windshields were obtained using ring-on-ring test fixture with compliant load and support rings to accommodate the complex curvature of test specimens. Significant reductions in strength values were observed during manufacturing, shipping, installation and in-use service of the windshield. Dynamic failure measurements were also carried out to help estimate the safe allowable stress which the windshield can sustain over its design lifetime of 10 years.
