Strain Rate Effects On Fragment Size Of Brittle Materials

A one-dimensional analytical model was developed to study the fragmentation phenomenon of ceramics under dynamic loading. The model integrates the elastic stress wave propagation with the cohesive crack initiation and growth process. Both the average fragment size and the fragment size distribution can be calculated using this model. Rate-dependent fragment size was calculated using the model. A scaling law was obtained to describe the size-strain-rate relationship, which explains the available experimental observations.
