Stemware Leader Dies Aged 79

Prof Claus Josef Riedle, 9th-generation president of the Austrian drinking glass & decanter maker Riedel-Glas, died in Italy in March from a heart attack at the age of 79. His death comes 31 years after he introduced Sommeliers, a design that many claim to be the first ever wine-specific glassware. He found the design of a glass could have a profound effect on drinkers' perceptions. Prof Riedle created thin, light, long-stemmed glasses that were a major departure from the heavier, cut glasses previously in vogue. He had been experimenting with different designs from 1957. Prof Riedle was born in Polaun, now part of the Czech Republic. His colourful life included being conscripted into the German army to fight Italian partisans; being held prisoner by the American army; & leaping out of a repatriation train bound for Germany when it reached Austria.
