Glass remains a popular material for containers in the ready to drink (RTD) market and growth of 3% is expected for glass in 2003. United Glass is among manufacturers installing bespoke capacity for the sector and is working to bring new beer products to the market with five leading brewers as well as regional producers, using 3D design applications. Leading spirits brands expect to benefit from redesigned bottles every 3-4 years and new launches are emerging in 2003. UG claims that no other material can challenge the purity, value, appeal and recyclability of glass. It is concerned, however, that proposed UK legislation may penalise glass, resulting in more of it going to landfill. Meanwhile, UG plans to continue its strategy of focusing on the alcoholic beverage sector.
