The packaging sector occupies a key position in the French economic and industrial landscape. With sales of nearly 20BN Euros and a workforce of 120,000 in the sector, France is the world's third biggest exporter of packaging and the fifth largest consumer of packaging, after the US, Japan, China and Germany. World sales of packaging are growing at an estimated 4.5%/pa. The rise in raw materials and energy prices caused manufacturer's margins to be reduced because they could not pass onto customers the whole of the increase in input prices. This article examines the different types of packaging including cans, card and PET.
