Three major demands have a significant impact on a glass melting furnace project: a) The customer's expectations; b) Emissions and noise regulations, and c) ISO 9001 certification. To meet all these requirements, three basic functions must be considered. First is contract management, which includes all internal procedures relevant to the organisation of the project management; Second, suitable tools are needed to investigate the basic design; and third, means must be available to economically convert the basic concept into a fully engineered and detailed design. This paper details how to fulfil these requirements, and includes an over view of the process steps and tools that have become an obligatory parts of the design and planning of furnace installations.
