The contemporary American glass industry may be described as being in essentially good health; on an annual basis, its four sectors - container, flat, speciality, and fibreglass - together yield over 20M tons of product worth a total of US$30BN. Nonetheless, in order to continue flourishing in an increasingly globalized market, the industry - an employer of over 150,000 - will have to face divergent challenges, ranging from increasing productivity to reducing energy consumption.
