2017 is officially the Year of Ecology in Russia. It is also the 100th anniversary of the October Revolution that ended the reign of the tsars and created the Soviet Union. In 1917, Tsar Nicholas II officially set aside land near Siberia's Lake Baikal for the Russian Empire's first nature reserve. This article discusses Russia's recent ecological progress.
