Spontaneous Cracking Of Silica Glass In Alkaline Solutions

The spontaneous development of networks of cracks has been observed on silica glass immersed in NaOH solutions at 80 degrees C. The process responsible seems to be transitory, causing preexisting surface microcracks to extend and branch, and is followed by dissolution.
