Ferrous-iron, ferric-iron and cobalt oxide concentrations in glass can be spectrophotometrically evaluated if a suitable instrument is available. This spectrophotometer can be based on only one detector with the following characteristics: the 350-1000nm spectral range is covered, the detector is located near the sample and is equipped with a large sensitive window exhibiting a uniform responsivity. In this paper, a Perkin-Elmer model Lambda 20 spectrophotometer is used for the evaluation of Fe0, Fe203 and Co0 in soda-lime and borosilicate glasses of industrial production or prepared in the laboratory.
