South America: Argentina Expected To Use More Glass Containers

The recent economic problems which led to devaluation has seen the cost of plastic and aluminium increase dramatically and many soft drink manufacturers and other food companies are expected to start replacing plastic bottles with glass to reduce costs. Over the past few years, glass had almost been completely replaced by plastic which became the main packaging material for products such as soft drinks, sauces, and edible oils. The plastic raw material, PET is, however, imported and since devaluation, Coca-Cola estimate that the price of a PET bottle has increased by around 140%. Because of this, Coca-Cola Argentina have invested in modifying its filling lines to accept glass and will market its soft drinks in a new glass container. The domestic beer producers are also expected to covert from aluminium cans to glass.
