The recent explosion of activity in sol-gel processing of glasses, ceramics and organically modified materials is reviewed in this paper. Sol-gel methods are briefly described and the wide range of both established and potential industrial applications are discussed in the areas of coatings, bulk-samples, fibres, porous products, powders, inorganic-organic hybrids, nanocomposites and biomaterials.
