[Soda Ash] Tanzania - Proposed Tata Plant Site Shifted

Tata Chemicals has withdrawn its intentions to construct a soda ash factory on the shores of Lake Natron in Tanzania. The investor is now preparing to undertake an impact study on a new site, 32 kilometres away from the lake. Tata announced the development at a stakeholders meeting convened by the World Bank in Dar-es-Salaam in May. Tata's action comes after months of pressure from environmentalists who said industrial extraction of soda ash from the lake would threaten the life of flamingoes that breed there.
