Slow Growth For Industry Across Europe

Many sectors found 1996 a difficult year with little growth in production. Overcapacity in some sectors has led to pressure on prices but has also contributed to healthy trade surpluses with countries outside the EU. Total production in the industry amounted to 27.2m tonnes in 1996, up 0.4% on the preceding year while employment fell slightly to 228,000.
