In Situ Characterisation By Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Of The Reactions Between Glass And Water

The reaction between a sodium trisilicate glass and water has been characterised using the cylindrical internal reflectance method. The results indicate that reaction layers develop on the glass, with extensive rearrangement of the silicate matrix, leading to silica-rich regions.
