Silicone Elastomers To Soundproof Glass

A short article, briefly reporting that a thermoplastic silicone elastomer is under test as soundproofing sheets for vehicle windscreens and windows. The new material, called Geniomer, is a polydimethysiloxane/urea copolymer that combines the typical properties of silicones with the thermal moulding capabilities of a thermoplastic. Wacker Silicones has developed a proprietary process to cure the soft segment that is physical instead of catalyst-based. A key advantage is the resulting high purity and absence of by-products.
