Silica sand is an essential component of glass and an important component in whiteware bodies. It is found world-wide, yet only certain deposits make the grade. In Asia, particularly the ASEAN countries and China, consumption of high quality silica sand is growing fast, on the back of increasing glass production. In Japan, however, the impact of recycling and alternative packaging has started to limit growth. This article profiles some of the silica producers in the region and looks at trends in the supply industry.
