Despite their excellent strength retention at high temperature, their oxidation resistance and chemical stability, ceramics for high-temperature structural applications continue to be used only on a limited basis because of their brittle nature. A simple and inexpensive way of overcoming this problem is to introduce weak interlayers that deflect cracks.
