Sgcd Achieves Heavy Metals Exemption For Packaging

A group of American states have banned the international addition of four heavy metals to packaging since 1990 including lead and cadmium, and these states coordinate policy review through the Toxics in Packaging Clearinghouse (TPCH), which developed the model legislation and now recommends amendments to that model law. Lead and cadmium are occasionally used in glass or ceramic decorations and the SGCD has worked with TPCH to gain an exemption for glass and ceramic packaging until at least 1 January 2005, provided that leaching from a container does not exceed one ppm for cadmium or five ppm for lead, using the Toxic Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) test.
