Selenium In Glass: An Overview

The chemistry of selenium in glass is not completely understood. The boiling point of elemental Se is around 700 deg C, well below the temperature of commercial glass furnaces. As a result, Se is lost continuously during the melting process. Some Se does remain in the melt however, the amount depending in a complex manner on glass composition, temperature and atmosphere. The selenium remaining in the glass can be in any of several different valencies, some providing colour while others are colourless.
