Scare Over Diisobutyl Phthalate In Packaging

Germany is currently investigating how to stop a potentially harmful phthalate being used in packaging. Food packaging made from paper and board was found to contain diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP) which the Federal German Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) says can be dangerous if occurring in higher concentrations. DiPB is used as a softener in glues for paper and packaging and, via recycling is transferred to paper and board packaging. From there it may also migrate to the food itself. The BfR and the Federal German Environment Agency, followed meetings with industry in July and August, want paper and board producers to sign a voluntary agreement to stop using glues that contain the substance. Currently, there are no limits based on scientific evidence set for assessing DiBP migration from the packaging to the packed food product.
