Scarce Materials In The Us

Shortages of rare earth minerals is a visible and important issue for the economy of the US as well as national security. Potential shortage loom too for other minerals/ This article addresses current issues regarding the scarcity of some minerals, particularly those of importance for producing engineered ceramics. The article introduces the concept of a "criticality matrix," as described in a recent National Research Council report, and current and potential future activities aimed at relieving the shortages is summarised.
