Following an accident on 29 January 2008 that left one worker in intensive care and another with a fractured wrist, the works committee of Saint-Gobain Cristalería at Avilés, northern Spain, approved a call for a one-day strike. The 24-hour stoppage is scheduled for 6 February 2008. Employees of subcontractors are also called on to participate. In addition, unions Fiteqa-Comisiones Obreras and Soma-FIA-UGT will hold an open meeting about safety at midday. The works committee called on the company to change the way it handles workplace accidents.
