Safety Glass Technology In New Auto Designs

Auto industry experts predict that 40% of all new cars will feature sunroofs by 2010. As demand increase & the windscreens grow in size, so does vehicle weight, leading to concerns about safety. With this in mind, DuPont has introduced "Spallshield" composite interlayer technology, which can enable use of laminated glass with improved protective capabilities & reduced weight. Spallshield is a plastic composite that provides up to 8 times the impact performance of standard laminated glass. 2 layers of plastic are laminated to a single layer of glass with the plastic on the inside, protecting passengers from glass shards from exterior impact & from potential ejection in the event of a roll-over accident. By eliminating one layer of glass from a standard laminate & replacing with an abrasion resistant polyester film, weight reductions of up to 30% can be achieved.
