Ron Fillimore, executive director of Dow Corning's construction industry group says chunks of glass from buildings damaged by bomb explosions have been found as far as 2 miles from the scene of the event. Dow Corning has found that more architects, builders & construction engineers are starting to specify protective window systems to reduce injuries that might result from disaster induced shattering of windows. The two most commonly used systems employ laminated glass or protective polyester film, often with a structurally-rated silicone sealant.Laminated glass uses layers of glass surrounding a plastic interlayer with the edges sealed using a silicone sealant."Silicones are becoming increasingly valuable in improving structural glazing safety because of their high tensile & tear strength, long-term flexibility, resistance to harsh weather & excellent adherence.
