Safe Packing Of Food And Drink In Glass Containers: Guidelines For Good Manufacturing Practice

Glass containers are a long established form of packaging for quality food products. Such packages are familar in everyday use and are perceived by the cosumer as being reliable. In recent years there has been significant growth in this sector, particularly in the production of products which are subjected to in-container thermal processing. Here, the compatability of the jar, closure, product and the process applied are vital to the safety of the product. With familiar items such as the packaging used here and the sophistication of the manufacturing processes used, the critical nature of certain aspects of design are readily under-estimated. This was a matter of considerable concern to some members of CCFRA and a survey of the view of members found that there was broad-based support for an up-to-date set of guidelines to Good Manufacturing Practice in this area.
