Glass manufacturer PG Group officially opened a new R800M float glass manufacturing facility in Springs, east of Johannesburg, 5 November 2007. The plant, which operates two float lines, manufacturing 110,000 tonnes/pa, is part of a R 1.2BN, 3-yr investment. Construction began October 2005 & was carried out by Guardian Engineers, while Teco was the major contractor. The project was completed on time, within 5% of the original budget. Stuart Jennings, CEO of PG Group, said that the company was working with the DTI to develop an action programme for the enhancement of the manufacturing sector. "What is required is an aligned economic strategy for manufacturing. Alignment between the Department of Finance, the Reserve Bank, the DTI, the private sector and labour," he said.
