Russian Glassmakers Call For State Support

The Russian glass market has rapidly increased in recent years. Between 2000-2010, the annual growth of domestic glass production was 10-12%, which was achieved despite the global recession and its consequences. Over the past 10 years the production of float glass in Russia grew from 86M square metres in 2001 to 210M square metres in 2011, while 0.5/l glass containers grew from 5.6BN pieces to 14.2 BN pieces. The production of medical glass has also doubled. Currently , more than 80% of the Russian glass market accounts for glass containers and flat glass, which is associated with high demand from the food and construction markets. Russia's main glass manufacturers have called on the national government to develop measures to protect the domestic industry from dumped imports from abroad, which are associated with Russia's recent entry into the World Trade Organisation.
