Russian Glass In The Golden Age Of The Tsars

At the beginning of the 17th century in Russia, glassmaking, like many other arts and crafts, had a long way to catch up with its European counterparts. However, as Russia emerged as a nation during that century, and particularly after it became an empire under Tsar Peter the Great, art and culture entered a golden age. The history of glassmaking in Russia at this time shows clearly how the craft benefited from the Tsars' new interest in fostering native art forms and from their increasing openness towards European culture.
