The Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive will provide local authorities with an opportunity to raise recycling levels and help meet targets under the Waste Strategy. According to a DEFRA briefing paper recently released, the Government said it is keen to build on existing infrastructure. "The directive does not place obligations on local authorities, but on producers and distributors. However, we are keen to build on existing infrastructure and are looking into the role that civic amenity and other sites may play in providing central collection points and, a system whereby local authorities work together with retailers in running a kerbside collection system." Under current proposals, 6kg of WEEE per person will have to be collected.
